I don't have much time to respond, have to be at work soon, but I can say that:

Their individual pride is simply of a different nature. Renji's pride is what's gotten him to where he is today. He's an orphan from the streets of Rukongai; he can't rely on pedigree to support himself, on either a physical or emotional level. To strip his pride away would be a devastating thing, because his pride literally is all he has. It's what gives him a good work ethic, helps him stay devoted to his superiors - but ultimately, helps him stay devoted to himself.

Byakuya's pride is dangerous. It's very different from Renji's; it stems from a pride of pedigree and natural superiority, a superiority he did not have to earn. It prevents him, too, from forming genuine relationships with other people. It literally cripples his character. If Byakuya does not lose some of his pride (if he does not find the one person who can help him lose it, can help to chip away at those barriers he's built up since Hisana's death) then he really has no hope of ever forming a true connection with another human being.

I hope that made sense, now I must go and dry my hair lol omg Isan, I know, I loved that thread, that's why I created the AarinNerds social group. Plus what you said about Byakuya becoming emotionally as well as physically unraveled in Renji's arms ties in to what I just said <3

And jojo I think you described Renji's pride in what you just said; he certainly is a very strong personality, and that I think is why.

@Artemis will this ever end? now, my side of the story: i completely agree that their are different, pridewise, i was going to say it, but you can't elaborate much on yaoi during small breaks at work. Renji's pride, the stray dog's, is all he has and has helped him rise through the ranks, but at the same time i can imagine that he has suffered through tougher times than being bottom to Byakuya, while his taichou is a stuck up guy (and we love him in spite of it) whom i can only occasionally picture giving in completely and allowing himself to be ravished by an underling. that is why i strongly favour ByaRen as a versatile couple, depending on moods and situations. i am against Renji seme only if Bya never gets to be on top, because i believe it's perfectly natural for them to switch, their personalities actually recommend it

Bwhahaha well, I'm so blind to reason I won't even let them be switches; I can't imagine Byakuya on top. I wrote that one fic with him on top and maybe that's why it's so funny. Not tooting my own horn, I'm usually pretty bad at writing humor, but while I wrote that, it seemed so ridiculous I guess that ridiculousness came out. *runs away from ByaRen and switch lovers*

This debate will never end!!!! Until we have something else to talk about here in the Shrine to the 6th Division My biggest fear is that this place will die some day

Well we all love Byakuya and Renji and even though we have a difference of opinion we all still have on thing in common. We do love seeing them together no matter who is on top or bottom. Except I am growing a new obsession with Grimmjow. HEHEHEHE
