Wow, that must have been a long trip for you. Actually I have a few co-workers who are from Germany too who only get to visit their families maybe once every three months. It's kinda tough. D: However, they say that they like Austria and also the pay here is better so they don't plan on moving back home anytime soon.

If you ever want to visit Salzburg I can be your guide. Though to be honest I hardly know of any historical place or their background story, I usually only frequent places like cinema, shopping malls & restaurants. xD
