    Global Motion Compensation

Downloaded Zetsui and burned it to disc. Tag - GMC not supported -comes up on screen, file will not play (sound of swearing). According to tech support Philips DVD players do not support GMC. Actually I don't think they ever understood the question ('GMP files? please hold' 'No, it's GMC-hello?') . So, what I would like to know, is, how do I spot the GMC before I burn it to disc and get an unpleasant surprise. I've looked at the properties of the files and they look the same as other files that do play. Can it be disabled? Information about GMC online is mostly technical jargon. I now know my DVD player supports 1 warp point, not the 3 required by GMC. Now if I only knew what a warp point was.....Or, if you know of another brand of player that does support GMC that would be nice, too. I'm in America, region 1. Don't know if that makes a difference, but I like to share. Yes, I did just spend 40 minutes going around in circles with Philips tech support. Why, does it show? Thanks I.

Okay, so I don't think that this post really answers your question-- but if does, I'd be glad. Anyway, so try downloading Super, using which you would be able to re/encode almost any format to the DVD formats ( DivX or XviD, which ever you wish ). This usually changes the encoding type, thus negating any role of GMC.

Actually, if the file is not originally encoded with GMC, and it is getting so when you're burning it on the DVDs; you could de-activate the GMC encode checkmark in the Options menu. ( Of course, this step is different for every other burning software, but there will be an option for this somewhere definitely. ) I do not know/found a way how you can possibly know whether a file is encoded with GMC or not. Sorry about that.

And btw, seeing how this is just a playback problem, why don't you try using a GMC extension support? Please read your player user manual-- there would be something of the sort ( there usually is, especially if your player is relatively new )-- you'd just need to connect your player to the PC/laptop, and the stuff would play out alright. It's actually a cheaper way, too ( rather than going through the agony of downloading a file, only to know it's GMC-encoded and you can't do anything about it ). I'll check out the exact requirements for the Philips DVD players and edit this post later.

    Hope it all helps~!

EDIT : Oh, am sorry, I just missed out the part about your player having a single warp point. I'm not entirely sure about the warp points thingy, but as far as I know, XviD uses 3 warp points, whereas DivX uses just one ( many DivX players do support till 3 warp points, so as to enable XviD-playing too ). So if the latter's the format you're using, then it shouldn't be any problem. However, re-encoding is surely the best method I can suggest as of now, if the extension thingy cannot be done on your player.

Also, maybe it'd help to refine the information if let us know your DVD player model? I would be able to search the specifications for that particular model. ^_^

    Global Motion Compensation-and more

I had downloaded alltoavi to convert mkv and ogm files to avi, but until you suggested it I never thought of using it to alter existing avi files. Thank you so much! It not only solved the GMC problem, but allowed me to alter files larger than the standard 720x480. I can even tinker files with subtitles that look great on the computer but come out too low, or run off the sides on the TV. You're a genius. Thanks again! I

You're welcome, dear~! I had searched out a lot of things on GMC some time ago; glad it helped you out! ^_^
