It seems that your router doesn't give the ip to your pc. Or your network card is defective.
Try to see if the network card isn't disabled

The router, was it working well before? Maybe it's not configured right.

If the network card was disabled and you have enabled it, it should of got the correct ip from the router.

Before you do that, check the router's settings if you can. Make sure DHCP is on and that the IP address entered for the gateway matches your modem's.

You can also do a full reset on the router by holding the reset button down for about 10 and everything goes back into default mode

I have found that sometimes the easiest solution is going into the router's configuration page and resetting to factory defaults. Depending on which brand router this will be done in various ways, but if you go to the manufacturers website and do a search for "factory settings" and your router model, you should find instructions.

Give that a try and let us know what happens.

What's the brand of your router? and what kind of connection do you have? Is it cable or DSL...

here's the deal, if you do reset your router and it's a wireless router.. you might mess up some settings for the wireless

Now, if you're receiving an IP address of 169.254.x.x it means that the network cable is unplugged. The 169.254.x.x IP address is the IP address coming from your computer.. ALL computers have this kind of IP when nothing is connected into their ethernet ports (the slot where you plug the cable in the router or the modem). You don't have to worry if your PC is set to a static IP address since by looking at the 169 etc IP it actually means the DHCP is enabled...

Make sure that you try other available ports on the router before you replace it.. it could be that that port on the router is closed or something...

i believe a router has 4 led lights for the ports when you plug in a cable into them they should light up... If not try another port.. you can also try to unplug the router from the power outlet for about 15 secs and plug it back in.. observe the lights that are lit.

if the powerlight is blinking.. that's a bad sign.. if it isn't check your IP until you get a decent IP... somethings that looks like 192.168.x.x or anything as long as it's not 169.254.x.x

If you have a cable service company like comcast, shaw, cox or etc.. you need to have the physical address of your computer and it can be found when you connect your cable modem directly into the PC and checking if it can go online.. if it can... look for the physical address.

ON XP it's in Local Area Connection *right click* > status > the "support" tab > Details

ON VISTA > network and sharing center > local area connection > view status > details

ON Windows 7 > network and sharing center > click on Local Area Connection > details

This is how you check your IP too... The Physical address that you are able to retrieve from that setup should be placed into the system of the router

FOR DSL (verizon, at&t and etc), you have to change the IP settings of the router and sometimes you need to have the username and password that your ISP has given to you... and all of these settings should be changed in the system of the router itself

Basically, that's it for wired connections

For better guidance, I suggest that you just call the manufacturer of the device and let them guide you through the process
