Convert mkv files (with subs) to avi?

As the title suggests, I would like to convert an mkv video file over to avi. But along with the file format, I want the sub title track to be in the converted avi file too.

Can anyone help please? As always, I'm looking for FREE programs to use. I've downloaded a few who say they're free and then find out they're only good for 1 minute footage or some bull like that >_>

Also, the particular mkv file I have has more than one sub track to choose from, so I need to able to choose the sub title track to be shown.

    Thanks~

On Linux I use Avidemux 2. An windows version exists too. You might want to look also at megui / mkvtools. Virtualdub should be able to do it too although i can't remember how well manages the subs

    Thanks for replying ^^

I'm trying to use Amidemux, and I think I figured out how to convert to avi, but again, I don't know about the subtitle track. I think there is a subtitle option, or something, but I dunno what to do with it >.<

You have to save first the subs from avidemux and reinsert them in the avi stream always in avidemux. Or you can use mkvtools for extracting the subs and insert them in avidemux

My method would be to extract the video and audio out of the mkv using mkvextract

After that, I will transcode the video with the subtitles itself with either MeGUI/VirtualDubMod and then mux both the video and audio together with AviMuxGUI/MeGUI

I normally wouldn't wanna do that kind of conversion. Another way is to mux the subtitles together with the video or rename the subtitles the same as the video file without muxing it

Oh and remember, if the mkv comes with AAC, convert it, AVI doesn't mix with AAC audio so you will have problems muxing

    You can try this: AlltoAVI
I remember using this a while ago. I think I stopped only because it saved the dimension a little smaller than the original. (However, I didn't read the manual though ^^; )

    1. Avi mix just fine with .aac
    2. Extracting only the subs from the .mkv and pass it to avidemux is way faster and accurate.
    3. The muxing is fine but often highly inaccurate
