How do I "extract" an image from an anime?

I want to make a set from a scene in a fansub, how do I "extract" an image from an anime (avi/mkv format) so I can edit it in an editing program?

Do I need to download a certain program or something?
(If so, recommend one that is free.)

Well I'm using a video player called MpcStar, and it enables me to save screenshots from the anime directly ^^

And I read it somewhere in this forum that Ctrl+Prnt Scrn works too (but I can't make it work) I dunnno why

You can do it on VLC player....(free software)

Go to Video>snapshot....and it'll make a screencap for you.
The plus is...vlc player will play nearly every video format too~

It will automatically save it into your 'My Pictures' folder

Its not working cause you're using Ctrl. You do Fn->Prt Sc and then paste it into something like Paint, that comes with every generic computer.
