Well Toran, if we would go during the vacation... I mean in the week, not weekend, then I wouldn't be able to come.... I have to be with the kids (and I have to work)....and the weekend after the 14th is carnaval, so that takes precedence for those of us in the south.... btw, I believe our school-vacation is a week later So I guess that's the trouble with vacations.... not everyone has them at the same time So the weekend would still be best for everyone (I think).... what do you think?
The snow already melted here in Amsterdam I hope It won't be slippery outside when I have to cycle to school tomorrow morning... >_< I need to wear a helm and knee protectors lol I've never celebrated carnaval before. I only saw it on tv that's about it... But you know that school holidays are different for children who live in the north and the south of the Netherlands... I can't remember why there would be a February week off from school? VOorjaarsvakantie? (no that's in May right?)
well one of my friends said indeed "voorjaarsvakantie" :P but sas, then we will just come the 14th. it's not a really big prob, i'll just ask my mom
eh Link.... there's a holiday because of the carnaval Carnaval lasts (officially) from sunday untill wednesday -correct me if I'm wrong Sander- and then the rest of the week is needed to sleep off the alcohol Carnaval is only fun in places where everyone celebrates! Nijmegen is not such a place, so we always go south..... I used to work in Den Bosch, and its strange, during carnaval I actually felt weird when I wasnot dressed up.... Was there any snow left in Amsterdam? Here there was almost none... just in the greenery, so there was still some poetic landscape, but the roads were completely safe (although is was cold) brrrrrrr. Thanks Toran
The problem in Amsterdam today was.... No snow, and too many people!!!! It's like everyone suddenly felt in the mood to take public transportation XD I couldn't get into the first metro that arrived because it was packed, yes fully packed o.0 And the train station at the Bijlmer were filled with people standing or rather trembling waiting for the train to arrive.... Total chaos really >_< And the snow melted the instant it touches the ground.... you know that the city has warm water pipes everywhere... But I am so happy to be inside a building again, my cheeks were all red and paralysed, you should hear me talk, it's like I just came from a dental appointment.... And Sas, I believe you feel awkward because you was not dressed DOWN ^_^ You should always take a wig along during those 4 days. Just put it on whenever the situation forces you to do so.....
Good lord, again 7 pages to read. Haven't read the last two yet, so maybe I'll say something stupid xD I have a change of plan: My friends have a slightly different time table as I have, and they have lessons thursday, so I'll be coming alone to A'dam this thursday. That means I can come to the Boekenbeurs on thursday and meet you all again!!! xD xD xD Just give me a time when you're there @ Link: Carnaval this year is at 22, 23, and 24 february. It changes every year, just as Easter ('Pasen') changes every year. Carnaval is even linked to Easter; it's 40 days before Easter. Carnaval marks the beginnen of the catholic 'vastentijd' (don't know the english term). That's why Carnaval is also called 'Vastelaovend' in dialect (the eve of 'vastentijd'). In the south, we have the whole week in which carnaval falls off. It's the official Voorjaarsvakantie. In the North, it's a week earlier, I guess. And Carnaval without dressing up weird is stupid: I'll be wearing a blue kimono, or more precisely a blue dress that should resemble a kimono I'll be "Sander the Geisha", including the make-up xD Oh and btw: I have a date with a chinese guy tomorrow. A yaoi-dream come true
Sorry but don't you think its kindda funny to celebrate before you abstinate from eating o.0 Muslims do the other way other (suikerfeest) Good dear Sander.... Or should I call you Sandra, and again sheesh I'm jealous
Ahhh I wish I could come to the boekenfestijn -.- I really love to go there, just love it! Darn. It annoys me that now that it's finally close to me, I can't go ^^ And, whaha ^^ Now, I DEFINITELY want to see you like that, Sander :P I just HAVE TO :P I hate it that the north/south vacations are different. And, good luck with your date!! Sounds like fun
Hahaha, Well, maybe you could come the sunday (february 22th), if you can get the monday off for a day. Would be lots of fun! And Sas, why don't you come too? And I'll surely not be the only guy dressing up as a woman those days: I always love the straight guys who decide to dress up as prostitutes. They're so freaking disgusting, so funny. And in several villages in South Limburg, "Aw Wieverbals" (Oude Wijvenballs/Old Wifes balls) are held: it's obligatory there to dress up as a woman Pretty stupid traditions, actually, but nonetheless very funny. And Link, I don't abstinate from eating. Most people don't do these days. Although I was raised catholic, I really don't believe in it anymore. The only reason I like "Aswoensdag" (the day after Carnaval, catholic tradition predates that everyone gets a "assenkruisje", hence the name) is because of the tradition of "Hieringebiete" (Haringenbijten). Yummy! And thanks!! I still have some clothes hanging over the central heating for tomorrow. Still need to iron them, I've just washed them
Owh and Kreatio: Maybe you could come to the Boekenbeurs in Maastricht in April 2009. Yes, we also have it here.
