Burning DVD

I'm desperate for help here, hopefully someone can help me out. I've been burning DVD as my backup file all these while but recently all the DVD that I've burn can't be opened. Either it can't be read or it's hanged when I opened it. I'm using Nero. I've asked so many ppl about this and nobody has encounter this b4. I wonder why 'coz I've no problem last time but not now. My setting for the DVD is ISO 9660+Joliet, mode one. And the files I've been burning r avi files. Can anyone help me out, I would be very much appreciated. I'm so frustrated here. THanks.

The DVD cd's you use are they compatible with your burner. I mean what cd's do you use is it a + or a -. Perhaps the cd's you use now arent compatible with your player

You can find out which one you can use on the box of the burner or on the DVD burner it self, it should have a + or - sign on it but if you see a word dual/multi then both can be used

Oh yeah what Nero version do you use

Thanks kunitsu. I'm using NEro version 6.6.0.8 and those DVDs r the same I used b4 which is compatible with my dvd rom. Do u think a newer version will help. The latest is Nero 8 right?

Oh wait I re-read your post and you are burning video avi files right.
Well to burn them into actual DVD's that can be played on DVD video players you have to convert them to DVD compatible video files unless you have Nero 7 which automatically burns them without conversion.

Wait there is already a Nero 8, the latest I know is only only Nero 7

Your Nero is old, if you use an LG burner you need an up to date Nero. They use to fight each other. Just install an up to date Nero and try to updade your burner's firmware. My LG and Nero get along very well.

kunitsu - Well actually I'm not burning DVD video, it's avi itself and I can't open the files with my dvd rom which I can last time. Yes, there's Nero 8 now.

Munemasa Katagiri - My burner is not LG, it's Sony. Ok will try to get Nero 8 and reinstall, thank u very much.

I think the problem should be at the speed you've burnt your DVDs. DVDs, unlike CDs, do not function at 16x ( well, most of them anyway ). So you have to change the burning speed to 4x. And even though the speed written on your DVD might be higher, to be on the safe side, burn it at 4x. It does slow down the process a bit, but it makes sure you're able to read your DVD wherever you wish to. Like-- your current DVDs might work at some laptop or PC, which've a high reading speed drive.

Also, it's not really necessary to convert AVI files. If you use Nero 6 or above, it'll be alright burning them just as it is. Nero takes care of the rest.

And um, I thought there's a Nero 9 out too? O_o Or maybe I got the wrong info. Anyway, it doesn't really matter which Nero you use, if it's a 6 or later version.

Jade Phoenix - I did change the speed to 8X and my burner is up to 16x. The funny thing is I can them with the speed of 16x last time but not now. Will try to change to 4x then. I didn't convert the avi files, I burn them as avi itself. YEah, it's Nero 8, the latest. Thank u soooooooooooooooooo much and will try it out.

Um, I didn't mean the burner speed actually. I meant the speed the DVD is meant to be written at. So well, that's why I said to put it at 4x. Cuz I'd faced quite a similar problem with some DVDs my friend had sent me, and later on, it turned out that they played randomly. [As if they had their own wish ] And the same thing happened when I tried to burn a DVD. My computer mech suggested I should do so.

I am able to burn DVD's at 16x with no problems.
