I find it easier just to play OGM/MKV files as is. Really, to thoose of you who don't want to spen too much time converting everything u dl as this, grab Video LAN Client - videolan.org - as its a one stop place to play anything. The only real reason to convert OGM and MKV to AVI is for making a VCD or DVD using Nero or other software till they decide to support the more powerful file types. I actually prefer to get things in theese formats so i can switch between sub and dub depending on weather or not i can look at the screen or not.

OGM is a more effective codec, which uses less space in every file, that's why a lot of ppl use it. Of course since is new technology not all the players allow it.
I agree with LordSylak, if you're not having problems with your ogm file, don't convert it (is saves space remeber?)., I wrote the guide for ppl that is actually planning to see their files in vcd (in the dvd player).

its not so much a new Codec, as it is a powerful fiel type. It uses the MPEG-4 codecs for video compression (XviD, DivX, Cinepack, etc) but its audio streams and subtitle streams are based in the OGG Vorbis codec. It also supports multiple Video, Audio, and Overlay Streams, so the only reason tehy tend to be bigger is that htey have more stuff in them. MKV supports only 1 video stream, and uses AC3 Audio compression and Subtitles, which is what a DVD uses, so they're not really efficient. Really, after you hang around in IRC channels where encodign video is common discussion, you pick up alot form that as well as just watchign the files and lookign at their properties.

yes, but with VirtualDub you need to save as wav, with VDub Mod you can demux the stream in whatever format it was origanaly.

Lord Sylak said you only need to convert OGMs if you burn VCDs DVDs. I do something that seems a bit less common, and I wanted to know if I'll need to convert.

Instead of making VCDs I use my burner software's ability to make data cds to burn .avi files onto cds so I can free up space on my computer. Question is, will that work for OGMs? Can I save them on a cd as .ogm or .ogg files or whatever and have them play from cd normally?

    Thanks for the info
