Need Shockwave Flash Player

I have a small problem: My Swf (Shockwave Flash) player has been acting up for some time and won't play any swf files on my harddrive anymore. I've tried all tricks I know to solve this issue, to no avail.

So now I am looking for a new swf player. Does anyone know a player that is free and reliable? I don't want to click on every available link in Google and get spyware etc. on my computer, so it would be really helpful if you could give me some recommendations.

You can get a shockwave player from authentic Adobe (originally by Macromedia, later becomes part of Adobe, the provider of adobe photoshop program) website @ http://www.adobe.com/products/shockwaveplayer/

Um, this is probably a stupid question, but... is this really a player? Because I can't find an executable player file anywhere after the installation. Is it just a browser plugin?
