Well….I would say if you don’t know when the problem started (or dont have a restore point before the problem) and you have had problems with system restore before that it might be better to leave it be. I know system restore can be a bit fickle over how good it works and what not. If you do decided though to do system restore in the future, remember that if it does slow down your pc after doing a system restore you can always do another system restore back to the time before you did the initial system restore, if that makes sense. That should hopefully put your computer back to its original quicker state.

As for whether system restore is the only way to fix it question: no it is not the only way to fix it. If you can find out where the possible spyware/affected program is on your computer and remove it fully then that would help. With my friends computer she had more than 1 message box coming up at the end and after I manually found and removed some of the offending spyware programmes on her computer one of the message boxes stopped appearing.

You could try installing this free program (CCleaner http://www.ccleaner.com/ ) which allows you to alter what programs as initially run when you start windows. This will allow you to see if there is a simple explanation towards which program you are having the trouble with.

Although for my friends pc we found it was practically impossible to find all the problem programmes. With hers we just left it having that one problem since all it is, is one message box whenever shutting down. But I would say if you go with this option, make sure you have everything backup. Therefore if something seriously does go wrong due to the problem at least you will not have lost all your files.

The other option, which I always go for whenever I start noticing too many things not working 100% right on my computer is a complete reformat and reinstallation of windows and all programmes. Not only does this remove the original problem but it will make your computer as good as new again (since over time with general use and without a reformat the computer will gradually slow down). If you have a genuine copy of Windows XP (genuine being a copy from windows as opposed to one which has been modified by the computer manufactory to only run on their machines), then this is relatively easy to do if you are confident with installing programs. Just remember to first take off all the files which you want to keep before you start.

Hope that helps towards whatever you decided to do.

I got new message yesterday. I think the message is similar to 1st one but diff. in number since there are random numbers other than just 0 like last time
[I couldn't memorize all of the numbers though]
    ------------------------------------------------------------------------
"[The first line mostly about location & number].....The memory could not be read. Click OK to terminate."
    ------------------------------------------------------------------------
Is it due to my memory problem? I have 1GB memory that was freshly purchased two years ago. Is it the time to change to new memory already??

You can try to clean your memory with a common pencil eraser, maybe it's dirty. If you have new errors it's most likely it's dirty or faulty.

Uh..you meant I have to pull it off and clean it by hand with a common pencil eraser..Will that really OK to do that?
Btw, I able to wrote down the first line of that message

"The instruction at 0X69532777 ....The memory could not be read. Click OK to terminate."

Once it appeared again [I really hope not], I will update the rest but it only a few words left with whole bunch of numbers

It's OK to clean the golden part of it, if you're not sure call a friend or a specialist who can help you and make some memory tests after cleaning them to see if they're not faulty.

    Red face

Did you accidentally delve into some of your systems files and maybe delete them thinking they were something else?OO I know my computer started saying messages like that when I went into the systems folder and deleted some things that I thought were cookies and ad-ware but they ended up being things that I really needed ><. Maybe if you computer has the option of making recovery disks you could burn them and us it if you computer is causing too much trouble for you. I think this is usually a last resort though, don't take my word for it cause i'm not a computer expert i'm sorry >< but I ended up having to do that and it actually worked out pretty good for me ^^ I hope you find out what the problem is.

i would need to see the error to be certain but the error is occuring after the computer's BIOS has already tested the ram(this happens everytime the computer is started up unless you have enable "quickboot" or something like it in BIOS so it still sounds like a program issue are u running windows and if so what version. a quick fix in Windows XP is going to Start-->Run-->type MSCONFIG then click ok--> selective startup tab --> and disable any programs that you dont reconize in the list. This will allow you to choose what programs are active when the computer starts up. if this does not help try the ram cleaning though if windows is reconizing the correct ammount of memory there really should not be a prob. with it!

Other than that if the message continues it might be due to a dammaged motherboard (usually moreexpensive to fix then to replace) so the alternative is backing up any files onto a a portible media device and replacing the motherboard < this is the worse case senerio I can think of that would be related to this error message > so dont take it litterally untill you try all other options.

    hope it helped
