    mkv files [SOLVED]

Yo! I'm tired of not getting to watch certain episodes just b/c they have the mkv extension instead of avi. Can anyone tell me how to play mkv files (or else point me in the right direction)? I use Windows XP and Windows Media Player. I'm EXTREMELY computer illiterate. I've tried to find tutorials on the web, but they're just beyond me. Any help would be appreciated. And remember to use small words and annunciate very carefully. Pictures would be a plus.

LOL That's the exact same site I found! My eyes glazed over as I read it, but I'll do my best. I guess I just d/l every link listed? I'll do that, then we'll see what happens. Thanks

I use myself Combined Community Codec Pack, a very streamlined codec pack based on FFDShow. It has only the necessary filters/splitters besides this and one or two other codecs to play various stuff (this includes .mkv). If you are looking for easy solution, I'd recommend trying CCCP. Link is in my sig. Do read the instructions in FAQ/Wiki regarding removing priro codecs/packs before installing if interested.

Just get the VLC media player. This should work just fine and it's free. I use it to play all of my mkv files. Plus it's also nice because you can play avi files and take screenshots too.

p.s. love the Howl icon.. he's so bishie ^^

    Talking Get Vlc!

    Soubi is perfectly right!
you can get VLC Media Player and you will see mkv extensions very well and even other files that give you trouble and it's not very large either.
    GOOD LUCK

I've had some trouble with files avi. (bad coordination between sound and image, errors etc)format and somebody recommended VLC. ever since, I've used only VLC, except for rmvb files (those work with realplayer) and I'm more than satisfied. Try it because it can't hurt but you'll love it; and it's not that large
you can get the link from Soubi
If you have problems, look for it on google or on yahoo.
as for bsplayer, if you have the right codecs, it's OK but VLC isn't as demanding

    Pray for Japan

There are 3 top free video players:

#1 Combined Community Codec Pack (cccp): many anime fansubs recommend this one.

#2 K Lite Codec Pack: the one i'm using myself and i've never had problem playing any video format
ps: you'll find many download links in the page but i recommend K-Lite Codec Pack 2.77 FULL

#3 VLC player: this one is good too.
well, there is some people have some problems with it...but STILL, others don't have any problems at all
    Soubi's post have the link.

The choice is all yours! ^^
