Hi everyone.
Could someone point me in the direction of a FREE reliable software that fixes broken/corrupt WMA (windows media audio) files? I am a complete computer n00b so any help is appreaciated.
All my googel-fu so far has lead me to pricey software ads I can't afford (I'm a poor jobless Uni student. And when success of repair is not guaranteed I can't afford to experiment with programs I'm going to use only once for one file) or places that try to give my computer a virus.
Now more closely of what happened.
Basically what happened is that I was doing my ethnology & folkloristics fieldwork abroad for a week, where I did interviews that I recorded with Olympus digital voice recorder VN-5500PC. When the interviews for the day were done I decided to copy the files from the voice recorder to my laptop that I had brought along, so I would have more room on the voice recorder for the fallowing days interviews. I use the laptop super rarely, since I have a PC at home I am more used to.
When I deleted the files from the voice recorder, it was still connected to the laptop, and I didn't notice that the stupid laptop with it's stupid Windows XP (my PC is still on Windows 2000, so I didn't have any idea that W XP is trigger happy in re selecting things) had also reselected the freshly copied files with the voice recorder files I was deleting.
I noticed the mistake as soon as I hit the delete button and saw that my freshly copied files were gone from the laptop too and not from only the voice recorder. Also since the files were so freshly copied from the voice recorder to the laptop, the files didn't go to the rubbish pin. So I had lost them from both places.
When I got back home a week later, my father managed to retrieve somehow the files from that day, using the voice recorder as an external drive. Of the three interviews of the day the two smaller ones are working fine but the third and most important and largest interview file is kaput and doesn't work. So now I basically have a 21.9 mb large broken wma file staring at me.
I guess it is hard for me to accept that the 21.9 mb large file I have in my computer now is useless and the hour and half long interview is lost forever. I guess it would be easier to accept the loss if I didn't have the broken file staring back at me, whenever I am working on doing the paperwork for the interviews from the fieldwork. I would be super happy if I managed to fix the file even partially, and something from the interview could be salvaged.
So does anyone know of some good program that fixes WMA files. Or perhaps some of you more knowledgeable people would be willing to try to fix the broken wma file yourselves? I could upload it if someone is willing to give it a try.
I guess I am just super disappointed that my father managed to even retrieve the file but it is not working anymore. And it was a darn good interview.
