Winblows 7 should be less demanding of resources than Vista. What model is the laptop?
There's this software from the microsoft website that checks if it's 'ready' to be installed. It should check for compatibility. Also, go in the Sony website and check for your model, there should be some information there (at least I found some info for my hp; they had written the list of models that can be upgraded to windows 7, the list of some that won't have drivers for windows 7 yet can still be upgraded and the list of those who can't be upgraded)
How old is your laptop? I brought mine 2 years ago with Vista installed and pretty much as soon as Windows 7 came out I installed it.
The only problem I've noticed as it seems to overheat now when I'm playing games unless I use an external fan for it.
Apart from that I have had no problems

if your computer has that it should be fine.

The windows 7 upgrade avisor just finished it says my laptop is compatible for 32 bit but for the 64 bit it needs 'custom installation required' I have no idea what the difference between the 32 bit and 64 bit, can someone explain this to me?
Thanks
the 64 bit version requires a 2 or more core processor as one of its main requirements, along with 4 GB as recommend ram.
This is the case, as the 64 bit is more optimized for multi thread applications like Photoshop and video editors that if they have the above processor and ram requirements then the applications run a lot faster.
As these applications and can fully utilise the extra resources...
Presently, most applications are written (created) based on the 32 bit. However, as time goes by more and more new applications / software like Office 2010 and CS5 will only be compatible with 64 bit operating system. as Windows 8 may not have a 32 bit version.
side note: most newer 32 applications can install and run on a 64 bit version with no hassle i.e. I am using Win 7 Ultimate 64, but almost all my applications are 32 bit including BL games aside from Lamento
So if you can only install Win 7 32 but that fin as really XP or Win 7 is way better then Vista

Thanks to all of you!
