text editing freeware

Hi everyone,

I translate some manga once in a while and usually used photoshop.
Now, I don`t have my desktop pc and have to use laptop, so I don`t want to install photoshop because it`s quite heavy software.

Could you please recommand me a small size freeware that allows you to edit text like in photoshop?
(Align to the center, rotate text,　transparency of the text box)

I was thinking of GIMP, but I suppose it is still fairly heavy, as it is a full image editing prog like PS. I had a hunt round but I couldn't come up with a prog that just works with text layers on images. I think the thing is that people will mostly only want that as part of a full editor. I'd be interested to see if anyone can come up with one though.

Still, I have PS on my lappy, although it's an old version so not so big, but I would have thought your laptop could manage and have enough space for something like PS.

I suggest you to use a old version of photoshop, like I do, since I have an old computer. I use PS 7. It have a lot of useful tools, layers, and it's not heavy like CS.

First, thanks for the replies.

Second, I triend to install GIMP, but for some reason it doesn`t work for me

third, I don`t want if possible to install photoshop. I really don`t use it but for typesetting only.And even older versions are quite heavy comparing to other stuff.
I`m already loading my laptop with too much stuff, so if i can not to I`ll be happy ^^;

Yea, I have PS7 on my lappy. In fact i don't care to go any higher even on my desky, as 7 does everything I need and I know it like an old friend. The prog folder is about 175 meg, inc. image ready, and was built to run on 2002 comps.

Yup, I think is the best choice because is much more lighter than the majority of the programs and still have several useful resources.

Well, shirayuki, if you can't use gimp and don't want photoshop than perhaps you can try paint shop pro but I think is so big as photoshop and I personally dislike the interface (and doesn't have the same resources).

So decided to install older lighter version of PS ^^;
(Could you tell how much does it take, comparing to CS?)

My photoshop folder have 200 MB.
You need to search for torrents. I usually use this search engine here:

Did you tried Online Photoshop or similar applications?
I am not sure abut the extend of the functionalities of these... but i can be handy to not have to download soft sometimes...
