Free software that converts .mkv to .avi

So just as the titles states anyone have any recommendations as to a good and free program that can convert .mkv files into .avi files?

Or any recs on how I can I can play .mkv's without the constant slow down? Well other than buying a new laptop lol!

The problem of conversion is how much time it takes. But this is the best one:

thanks for the help! I have VLC and GOM, like them both a lot

I like .avi just cause sometimes I like to burn them to DVDs and I don't usually have to convert anything, I just plug them into Nero and Nero takes care of everything AND they play on DVD player!

My favorite video converter is Total Video Converter. Granted you have to "buy" it, it's not "free."

I use convert-X-to-DVD 4, which someone here posted about sometime. Basically it is your Nero program but one that supports more extensions

Also worth looking into is All-to-AVI for converting
(for this get of any codecs you use and install CCCP since you need to go into their settings as well).

I always avoid downloading MKV series because it would always be a pain to convert, most programs wouldn't support mkv or if there were multiple subtitle tracks would convert it wrongly. I don't really use mkv anymore since mp4 is more or less the hype now. But I would just use a direct to DVD converter.

Also for better playing, it is most likely that your old puter uses an out of date graphics card and probably has little ram as well. Because fansubs go for higher and higher quality some older cards are not able to handle it properly and will stutter while playing.

You can use Hardbraker to do video conversion. But I recommend you to try Video Converter. I used it to convert mkv to avi in batch so as to stream and play the videos on Apple TV. Here is a useful guide on how to convert mkv to avi you can check. Hope it helps.
