Yup, while you definitely should power it off when it's going to be unused for several hours to save electricity, turning it on/off all the time is a cause for stress, and not just on the HDD.

If you NEED to do it for awhile for some reason you shouldn't worry too much though, especially with notebooks as they tend to be geared toward such usage patterns.
