sound recording problem

Hey hey,

I've been recording sound clips for quite a while now, never had a problem but since the last reinstall of my pc it doesn't work anymore! I use Audacity but also tried windows tool. I can 'record' as in it shows that it's recording something and all but when I try to play it, it looks like it wants to play but doesn't. I've tried both my headset and cam with a microphone which both work fine on skype (also the test service) but that's it.

Anyone know what it could be?

I don't know if I can help or not, but just wondering.. is the new installation Vista? and is the sound not working only on the Window's recording tool or also Audacity both? and are you using a Dell?

I'm using the same windows XP as the previous time, and it doesn't work on both. And yes I have a dell desktop.

Installed all the drivers and plugins ? Also check that the Line-In isn't muted

Have you installed the drivers of your sound card and the codecs?

The drivers and plug-ins should be ok, could it have something to do with windows updates? I haven't installed any so far I believe.

I'd try perhaps uninstalling & then re-installing Audacity

It's most likely something to do with updates related to your laptop. Check if you can update its software (since you re-installed windows XP you probably have something to update) and you might as well do windows updates also.

okay, I'm a bit confused - but you do HAVE sound overall, or? I mean, you can play music and all and it works fine?
Only the recording doesn't work, even if the prog shows it records?

Could be several things - 1. your mic is broken, 2. the plug of your mic is in the wrong contact or it has a loose connection, 3. try another recoding program.
I also have audacity, but I only use it to edit and convert my audio-files.
I always record with Free Sound Recorder 8.2.1

@Shinzokage: if it was audacity windows recordings tool should work.
@Kinnetic: 1 & 2 I use skype so it can't be broken, and tried two different mics.

but it might actually be windows updates so I will try that, thanks guys!
