    Turn off hard disk

    Hi

lately I'm very annoyed by the noises made by my laptop
so I turn off the hard disk
    less noise and less heat
Is it bad or is it ok to do this?
I googled about it but I don't get any answer
If you can explain to me a bit, that'd be great

    Thank you

No, it shouldn't be any problem unless you do it too often. And really, is not much too explain.

power scheme like this is ok then?
I just don't understand why they originally have it set on never on plugged in mode

sorry if it's a dumb question
I have very little (ah make it no) knowledge on this

Well, pluged in it's referred to when you are connected to the AC network and so it's not necessary to save on the battery. Other then that you can set it as you please of course

Theorically, it is set to economise battery when you let your laptop open. It uses less batteries. Those options are made when you are "AFK" so it is quite useless when you have it plugged in. This can't be used while on the computer, since you would need it to turn (not to stop). My laptop also have this, and it is setted on 5 or 10 minutes I think... This is made especially for laptops... I never had any problems with that. I don't suggest to put the time really low...

For the power scheme it's better you do a test or two to find the right timing...

Have you cleaned the van in the laptop?
dust in your van can cause loud noise and increased heat when you laptop has to do something intense

Turning your hard disk off often while you're using the computer is actually worse then keeping your computer running because there's more wear to the system. So I would suggest you actually set it to never, but it's up to you. If you often leave your computer, but keep it on, it'll be better to have the hard disk turn off at a set time. Having the hard disk turned off while it's inactive will also save wear and power and keep your computer cooler. So you can choose whichever way suits you best.

My laptop always makes noise and heats up fast too, so I got a cooling pad and it stopped making noise and heating up - I guess that's another option~

Also as KarumA mentioned you can clean your fan from dust to stop the noise or make sure that there's a good enough space for air flow.

    Hope that helped some

I totally forgot about coolers, if the van is clean and it is still overheating from time to time then yes a cooler is a great investment. Check the van first though because that part is very important to keep temperature partly stable

Well... I still don,t get if it is the laptop making noise or the hard-disk making noise...

In the 1st case, most likely a cleaning of the fan would be ok... just to know, if you had a cooler, could be noisier than just the laptop...

Now... if it is the hard-disk that makes noise, be sure to backup it... it is usually not a good sign...

Also... when said you turned off the hard-disk... I guess it is to shut down the laptop... As some said, if you force the shut down while the disk is being accessed, it could be harmful (I do it all the time... but... he)...

One last thing... what is your laptop make and model?
