The model is Dell Inspiron E1505
It's clean . I clean it from the outside though I read in some articles and you should opn your laptop and clean it
But I'm not comfortable opening my laptop
I'm thinking about cooling pads too and like you said the noise could be worse?
Yes I need to shut it down or put in hibernate after 30 mis or so if I want to stay noise free
After I turned on my laptop for a while the fans went wild! It's a pain

Just wanted to point out a fact: Dell ain't good. For a laptop, the best ones are Toshiba. You will have way less problems with those!

Okay, just my words, you can ignore... :P

    As said above:
If it is the hard drive: Backup everything, not a good sign!
If it is the computer (fan): You may want a cooler and a cleaning.

Is there anything wrong with your laptop? For example: is it slower? Do you have 432643 things installed? Formatting and/or defragmenting your disk could maybe help?

I can't throw away my lappy yet
    Thanks for the answer guys
I guess I'll back up the the hard drive and get a cooling pad (hopefully it won't be noisy itself)
the thing is though my dad has dell laptop but a different model, his didn't heat up a lot nor make noises
    I really do need a new one don't I
My laptop is not getting slower I think. unless it's getter slower gradually and little then I won't notice
It says I don't need to defargment after the analysis

btw like you said above that the power scheme is useless when it's plugged in. I guess I can just use it on battery? it's so peaceful..no noise , no heat.

If you stare at it all day long or very long in general the ven starts to speed up so it can cool it off.

That's the main reason by me.

Does your hard drive tick from time to time by any chance?

like SpiritOfTheWinds said, start making back ups for important parts

Dell do not make the best laptops, neither does HP
They use the cheapest materials to build laptops so that their price can remain low, HP laptops are know to break after 1-2 years
A mac-book also, but that is because they do it on purpose (they are known to break right after the regular warranty stops) so you have to pay for the repairs if you didn't get extended warranty

Just about cooling... depending on what you use, there are different possibilities (some examples Compare Logitech Cooling Pad N100 - notebook cooling pad to most popular products - CNET Shopper
    - The ones that just "elevate" your laptop -> no noise expected... it is just an extra high put on corners to have ore air coming behind
    - Traditional cooling pads: these use 1, 2, up to 4 small fans... if the fan from your laptop makes noise, these ones will also. I used one like that and took one with a big fan more than 4 small ones... Noise level is stipulated on the description usually
    - Cooling mat -> These are not noisy... it uses a chemical substance that will capture the heat... The only downside of this ones are that you have to use it on a plan surface... In your laps, it doesn't work well...

EDIT: Some search on the make and model with noise as a problem... here the results:
    - http://www.geekstogo.com/forum/Dell-...n-t257624.html
    - http://www.notebookforums.com/post2928890.html
    - http://www.plex86.org/dell/Dell-E1505-Screen-Noise.html
    - http://answers.yahoo.com/question/in...0050757AA5ijc1

I find Dell had to change fans on some of there models, because they broke... but not related to the E1505... Are you still under warranty?
... In any case... try the steps proposed in the 2nd post of the 1st link... a tool to test the fan, and other diagnostic... that can help

    EDIT2:
To go back to your initial question: Will it harm your laptop to shut it down?
... The forced shut down (pressing the on/off button long enough to shut down the computer) will be of harm to the hard-drive if it is accessed. Basically, you interrupt the writing on the disk... can corrupt data and harm the mechanism if done to often...
    Some links on Hard-Rebooting...
    - http://www.ehow.com/how_4474504_rebo...ard-drive.html
    - http://everything2.com/title/hard+reboot

... but none specified high risk level of damaging your hard drive... Just be careful... do it when there is no or few activities on the drive

    like a clock ticking

that is enough information, if a hard drive starts ticking then it is dying.
I might live to see another 3 days, a week or perhaps even a month. I've never had a HD dying on me so I don't know how long it lasts when it starts ticking but when it ticks it means that there is something wrong internally inside it.

The ticking is not fast, like softly tick... tick... tick... tick etc.

How long have you had this laptop may I ask?

Lastly, like mentioned before, start backing up your things that are important because maybe sooner or later the thing will simply not boot anymore. If the HD is dying then that explains the sudden heat also
