what kinda zip file was it? i mean... what was it supposed to be?
It was supposed to be an excel file I think. :o It had .xlsx in it.
have you tried to open them? cause wouldnt excel come up right off if it were an excel file?
Yeah but, like I said, after I extracted the files there was no excel file there. There were lots of XML documents which I don't know how how to use. :o
I opened excel and tried to open all the documents and this little popup appears saying:
Open XML
Please select how you would like to open this file:
An an XML table
As a read-only workbook
Use the XML Source task pane
And I've tried all three options and what I get is another popup which says "The specified XML does not refer to a schema. Excel will create a schema based on the XML source data".
If I have selected either of the first two options, it shoots to the design tab and in the sheet there's lot of random info such as cell references and zoom scale etc. If I select the third option I get a box with XML maps in it that basically puts the stuff I just mentioned on the sheet. :X
Maybe the files were not extracted correctly. You could try using another program.
Or they aren't real xls files. With Open Office you can also make xls files and sometimes Excel can't open them.
When the popup appeared did you try every possibility?
Unless the XML file was made with excel i doubt you'll be able to use it to open it, and after reading what you've put about schema's, if the file was created in excel it would have come with one so excel could read and understand the file should it need to reload it. The schema defines what kinda of xml file it is as there are many, because excel says it doesn't have one, the schema might be in a format excel doesn't understand.
From my own personal experience XML is normally associated with websites, so try opening it with internet explorer.

Did you try to check on forums or MSDN?
I guess, if the file format is xslx, it shall have been open with no issue with Excel 2007...<
Anyway... perhaps these can be of some help
- Introducing the Office (2007) Open XML File Formats
- Excel 2007 Open XML Specifics - Read and write Open XML files (MS Office 2007) - developer Fusion - ASP.NET, C# Programming, VB.NET, .NET Framework, Java and Visual Basic Tutorials
- you can also try with Open Office... shall be able to open xlsx
- or try to see if it open with the converter Download details: Excel Viewer
... if nothing works, I'd say the file can be corrupted...
... perhaps you can send the file and see if we can open it... if nothing critical and can be shared...
