Suitable software to rip sound/mp3 from video?

I'll try to make myself understandable

I'm trying to extract the mp3 from a video of a piano performance. I have the video already, I'm just wondering what I should use to just get the sound of the video.

Not sure if I'm making sense here. I tried searching past threads, but they're different from what I'm searching for I think.

    Can someone help me?

First you should specify the type of video(.avi/.mpeg/.mkv or something else?).
Anyway what should do the trick is "virtualdub".

Tutorial(section Extracting MP3 audio from an AVI):
Doom9.net - The Definitive DVD Backup Resource

Once you have the big .wav file you can convert it to mp3 using lame(there are gui for lame that are free too).

Both those tools can be found under the download section of the doom9 website.

    Hope that helps.

A specification of the type of video would be helpful to narrow down the best way to go about it.

I have used Quicktime Pro, MediaCoder, and an FLVextract program to extract audio before from video. But each of them sometime works with specify type of video. MediaCoder is a more rounded program (but I haven't touched it for a long while including updating it.) They have a forum and help section guide to help with the best setup to get what you need.
