Is there a way to decrease a video file size?

Hiya there. I downloaded a rather large avi video file, and I was wondering if there's a way to decrease the actual video size, in particular the resolution, while maintaining it's avi file format.

So I guess I'm asking if anyone knows of a FREE program I can use. As I said it's rather large, I think about 2 hours long and file size is actually 2.83 GB and the resolution is actually bigger than my computer screen's O.o

    Please help >_<

There are a number of way but probably the best free solution would be the Super video converter. In it you can select the container format (in this case avi) and then change the resolution and possibly the bitrate to get a much smaller file.

Word of warning though. Super can be complicated as hell to download but it is such a versatile program that its really worth it

MediaCoder is also a pretty good program to use. You might wanna try it since it's a freeware.

Super converter is fine with me. U mean ur laptop or pc can't play the video file?or is it slightly choppy? If your video's resolution file is like 1000X700(for example, higher than 1000), u can narrow it down to 640x480 and higher but not reaches until 1000x.
2)you must change your frame per second to 29 3)The bitrate must higher than 5000x to achieve good quality video. Lastly, audio, 44100 at 128kbps.

any question required just ask ok? Umm here's the link to download super converter. I used this since 2006 and it work fine on me. <333
    eRightSoft

    How to download?
    1)Select the 3rd tab[FREEWARE]->SUPER->download
2)Scroll down until u saw 'Start Downloading SUPER'. Click that.
    3)Click on 'download and use'
4)Scroll down at the bottom, u can see 'Download SUPER@setup file

Voila! i can't use this converter inside my laptop coz mine use Windows Xp Home Edition Service Pack 3. RAWRR make sure u read all the installment requirements first ok?

    Happy converting!

So I tried the SUPER Converter, and it really is confusing to navigate. For one thing, I have no idea were the new converted file ended up in my hard drive, and doing a general search yielded no results O.o

    Help please? >_<

If you right click on the program a menu comes up and it has something like 'save options' on it (I don't have the program in front of me so I'm not sure of the exact name). If you click that you can pick and choose where to save the converted file (and it'll tell you where it's currently set to so you can find the new file you just converted).

Do you mean "Output File Saving Management"?

And yeah, it's set up at "Output", but there's no files in that folder D=

I'm assuming the more likely conclusion is that I screwed up with something.

I "Add Multimedia File" and then "Encode". Have I messed up something?

Sorry, I don't have MSN; I know, weird xD

oh okies nuuu i'll do my best to help you in here k?*bows* heiki heiki *pats*

Yeah, u click right at 'Output File Saving Management' to change your converted files storage.

At 'Output' folder is for your converted files storage, therefore if u haven't started on converting file, video, etcs, that 'Output' folder still empty.

Before u can start to encode files:[based on your problem]
    1)Select the Output Container
    -Avi

    2)Select the Output Video Codec
-MPEG-4 (i always used whether MPEG-4, Divx, Xvid, or H.264/AVC, but so far i like
    MPEG-4)

    3)Select the Output Audio Codec
    -mp3

    4)Video Scale Size
u can choose 640x480 or 720x480 but since u didn't tell me what's your video resolution so.... ^__^:: These either two is the common scale that i use and it work fine on my mini laptop screen. =D

    5)Aspect Ratio
    -4:3

    6)Frame/Sec
    -29.97

7)Bitrate kilobytes per second aka kbps
I used 5376, if u find your video file still big, decrease it a little.
but not lower than 3000++ or else the video will loose it quality.

    8)Audio
    -Sampling Freq
    Always and Forever, 44100 :P

    9)Channels
    -Again, always and forever, 2.

    10)Bitrate kbps
    -128kbps

11)DVD language Select Audio Stream Track
To be honest, i dun really know what's this, but leave it to default

    And then you click encode, there will have a small window popped out;
    'Rendered File Optimizer'
-Select 1 of the following Four CC:
I always choose DIVX coz it compatible with all players. Then click 'ok'.
Then the encoding started. Wait until it finish. To watch it, just simply go back to 'Output' folder.

Tip:You can always analyze your input information by clicking twice at the file and compare all the detailed multimedia so u can decrease them by yourself.

I hope u can understand me mate. woot yoroshiku~
