Hmm, I don't have Windows 8. :/ I have seen other people having issues here . with Windows 8 in the past but I'm not familiar. Sorry I couldn't be more of a help.

I have found a solution for this problem! It’s a bit of a detour around the problem and it might take a while, but I think it’ll be pretty good solution for all XP games that don’t want to work properly... It only works for 30 days because of Windows XP's licenses etc, but I’ll update when I find a good solution to fight against that. Maybe you can just install it again..

Okay, so, I just used VirtualBox to emulate Windows XP and ran the game from there. I'm using Windows 10 and I had the same problem as you, game froze and I couldn't save/load.
It’s gonna be a wild ride to explain this but here’s what I did. Keep in mind that I came up with this only today so I'm not 100% sure of it, but it seems to work just fine. I haven't had any problems with my game:

Let’s collect all the pieces first:

    1. Download VirtualBox https://www.virtualbox.org/ and install it
    2. I recommend you download 7-zip too https://www.7-zip.org/ it’s better for this than WinRAR, install that
    3. Download Daemon tools lite (the free one), you’ll need it later https://www.daemon-tools.cc/downloads and install it (but I’m sure that you already have it, so yeah)
    4. Download Windows XP SP3 ISO https://softlay.net/operating-system...-download.html DO NOT INSTALL
    5. Download WinRAR version 5.21 (good for XP, make sure it is VERSION 5.21 and not the newest one, 5.60) https://winrar.en.uptodown.com/windows/download/190615 and put it in a folder, let’s call it “Windows XP help” DO NOT INSTALL
    6. Download Windows XP Mode https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/down...s.aspx?id=8002 , version WindowsXPMode_en-us.exe is the right one DO NOT INSTALL
    7. Go and copy the original .rar files of Togainu no Chi; all the parts and English patch. Put them into the “Windows XP help”

    Onwards!

    1. Use this tutorial to install Windows XP to your VirtualBox https://www.makeuseof.com/tag/downlo...-microsoft-si/ It’s nice and easy to follow and do not panic if you do something wrong! This is VirtualBox so nothing really matters, you can always delete the virtual machine and start again
    2. When that’s finished, and your XP is nice and ready, click devices>optical drives>choose disk image. Then find the Windows XP SP3 ISO file from earlier and open it. You should have Windows XP “What do you want to do?” menu open. Choose “Install optional windows components, make sure that Accessories and Utilities is checked, press next. No need to change anything else there.

Let's change the language to Japanese

    1. Go to control panel>date, time, language, and regional options>regional and language options. Go first to “languages” and check “Install files for East Asian languages”, press ok and ok once again, it should install some files no, restart XP1895. After that go back to the same place, but choose “advanced” and choose Japanese. Restart XP
    2. Go back to the VirtualBox interface and edit the settings of your XP. Go to “Shared folders” and add the “Windows XP help” folder there, make sure that XP has full access to the folder, “make permanent” is checked and it’s not read-only.
    3. Go back to XP. You can access the shared folder by pressing Windowskey+E. Expand “My network places”>”Entire network”>”Virtualbox shared folder”>”Windows XP help”. You can copy all the files from the folder to your XP desktop (or make a nice new folder for them, whatever you prefer). Install WinRAR and extract all the Togainu files in your desktop on XP. Also extract the main game at the shared “Windows XP help” folder. You’re gonna need that for your disk.

Okay, now we have all the pieces together, almost. Just a little more and we are ready to play! Hang in there

    1. Close XP for a second. Go to Daemon and create new drive (or use an old one, anything goes). Mount the drive with the CCD file from the shared “Windows XP help” folder.
    2. After that, go back to VirtualBox, edit the settings from “Storage”, add new Optical drive, choose the Daemon one with the Togainu file. After that there should be “Host Drive ‘-‘ “
    3. Open XP. Click “Devices”>”Optical drives” and click the “Host drive -”, now you should be able to install the game as normal (main game, patch and shortcuts should work fine)

If everything worked as it should, you should now have a fully working Togainu no Chi, saves and loading works, it should not freeze etc etc

Do tell if you have problems or questions with this, I try to fix them and try something new.
