    False add, or just paranoia?

A few times I have seen an add to freely download a 2012 virous scan. Normaly it wouldn't bugg me this much but I think the add looks a lot like that one virous that pops up and pretends to be a trile anti virous. Am I just being my paraniod self, or is this something to watch out for and for me to be very carefull not to click on acident?

Sorry if this is in the wrong spot.

i'd go with the No freebies rule , if they say its free its a scam or probably a virus or a phishing site so go for don't just to be safe

If you use firefox use abp blockers and better privacy add ons i never ever see those things you are talking about

Took me a while to hunt it down. They only show up when you don't want them.
Its a preaty large screen shot so I'm using spoiler tags. As I said befor,it looks almost legit, but just enough strangness to rais a flage of a possible threat.

Since that is a forum ad, I'm quite sure it's not a virus, but of course don't take my word 100% for it. What I can tell you is that AVG is indeed a free antivirus, I used to use it (though honestly there are better free antiviruses), so maybe that confirms that it's not a virus.

I also never experienced such an pop-up add here on Aarin... As Isarah already mentioned: I use Firefox with the "addblock plus" add-on! It is really good and never gives me problems. Would be an option to avoid those adds

we already know now it's not a virus but it's annoying isn't it?
and also: if I read right there was written sth like "3o day trial"!
so even if you want (for any reason) to install that programm be sure, that it's the official release and not some fake which requires you to buy some premium stuff after that "30" days!

Thanks for the advice. I wasn't going to try and download, but sometimes I swich between sites and was worried that a miss click would activate it. If everyone's sure that it's legit then I have less to worry about, even if I do click on it when switching I'll not have to worry about computer getting eaten. I just get paraniod as hell when I see anything that says anti virous and 2012 in it..to many bad experances.

Not just this, you shouldn't try clicking on those things. Most of these free scans stuff totally turn your computer upside down. If you think this is legit, just go to AVG site directly and download from the trusted source, never by clicking on the ad itself.

On general note, I'd suggest getting firefox adblock plus add on to keep nasty viruses under ad banners at bay and to avoid accidental clicking.

I've never seen this ad on af myself though. Have you subscribed to no ads usergroup?

Thanks for all your suggestions and help. I joined the no add group, so now there will be no risk of anything sneaky on this site eating my computer. I'm sure other members are more computer savvy than me so they'll be safe.

Thanks again for all the help.

hi, sorry for the late reply... just saw this~

If you are unsure, don't click on it or don't download it~
I actually have not seen this anti virus ad myself, but it could be generated randomly from Google Ads.

If you think downloading can help the site, it doesn't apply for now as there's no such ads programmed that way to this site. In other words, we will not get any commission if you choose to download something from any ads here.

    ~

    Are you using Internet Explorer?
My suggestion for not seeing weird adds that confuse you if they are legit or not on this forum would be to get an addblocker.
You have a fair share of toolbars which only take up extra space to begin with and are not really needed either but which you get from not paying attention when installing things. An addblocker might be a good thing for you to use.

If you are using IE then I would suggest switching to a better browser such as Firefox, Chrome or Opera.
I use Firefox with the addon AddBlockPlus and never see adds on forums or other sites.
