    hmm, thats an interesting way to refer to yaoi rape i dont really discriminate with what titles i read because i dont really find out what its about, i just start reading, and would only stop if the art was too bad or off-putting. so if its a rape story, i'd still keep reading, but its always bugged me as to how much of it is the uke's real feeling and how much of it is the situation and the victim trying to transfer his own feelings of humiliation and violation into affection for the rapist. i've always thought it like stockholm syndrome, especially if the rapist has locked the victim up somewhere out of possessiveness. it gets really unbelievable if the rape was really really bad and non-con, (not just "no-but-really-means-yes-just-too-embarrased-to-say-it" kind of 'rape') when in the end, they are all lovey-dovey ... i mean, no matter how nice the rapist is after the event, i would think the victim would harbour some sort of resentment towards being violated. plus, (though ive never done any psychology or anything) but some rapists tend to become really aggressive and forceful when things dont go their way, and its not something that can be cured by love ...

    Right, and there's also the fact that rape is a crime of power and humiliation, NOT passion. So all of these horny semes who go around raping ukes so it really makes no sense that they should suddenly fall in love afterward.

    So I think this just suggests that artists and manga-ka use the "rape" scenario as just another means of getting two characters involved in a romantic situation. We do actually have some real life depictions of rape in BL; that Gravitation scene, for example, although I felt there the impact on Shuichi, and his friends' response, was significantly unrealistic.

    Yeah. If my friend had been raped, my first response would not be, "So how was it?" "Was the guy hot?"

    I guess with yaoi you always have to be willing to suspend your disbelief in these situations and move on with the story.

    @ArtemisMS - While I was reading your post about the fantasy novel I was reminded of Beauty and the Beast. Although I've never read the non-Disney version I would imagine that the Beast might have done less than kind things to ...what's her name, in the course of her imprisonment, yet she also fell in love with him at the end. Maybe the rapist and victim love story is more common than I think...?

    OMG You had to mention Beauty and the Beast My pet fairy tale. Well, Beauty and the Beast is a descendant of Cupid and Psyche, which is a marriage tale (recall that Psyche becomes pregnant after marrying Cupid, and carries "Pleasure" in her womb while she works to win him back). It is believed that a story like Beauty and the Beast would have been told to young ladies who would eventually find themselves on the marriage market ... and likely betrothed to "beastly" men (or at least men they did not love). I've read the tale several times (only in English), but there is no mention made of the Beast being cruel. In fact, I believe the point of the story is to convince the girls that while a man may seem "beastly" on the outside (older, unattractive, etc.) he may still make a good husband and a kind life companion. So if the Beast were to assault Beauty in any way, I think it would in many ways revert what the story is trying to tell its young readers and listeners.

    And let me say, I am a thousand times intrigued by your comparison of semes to Beasts. That is truly fascinating. I don't know, I was even thinking about the Beauty and the Beast tale today, and wondering if I couldn't relate it to pop culture and somehow make a dissertation out of it (yes, I'm constantly waffling with topics ... it sucks lol). That is so amazing!

    Ahh, and please forgive me if I sounded a little pedantic here ... I just love Beauty and the Beast Yes, even the Disney version

    I didn't know that about Beauty and the Beast, thank you! I love it when I can say I learned something new. It seems so obvious now. I'm also glad to know that there is a not so Grimm beginning to the story.

    @Nninavante - I'm sorry I am a dunce at languages! I couldn't speak a word of Spanish...

    What is the history of yaoi? Does anyone know how yaoi or slash got started? Were there slash pairings between Caligula and Nero back in the time of the Roman Empire? Although homosexual relationships had a different social meaning and acceptance back in that time? Any thoughts? Were there any conjectures about Robin getting it on with one of the merry men? Or is this a totally modern invention?

    Well, homosexually has been a part of human culture since the beginning. Even Shakespeare had a boyfriend, right?

    Umm, as literature though, you mean the way we have fiction and artwork that we categorize as "yaoi" ... well Greek gods have male lovers (like Apollo and Hyacinth). Sappho have her lady friends. I have run across a collection of erotic Victorian lesbian fiction, but nothing from the men. Porn has always been a viable industry since the days of the printing press, I would imagine

    That's all I know ... not much

    I'm thinking about writing my exam paper about yaoi, so wohoo, this is my group, lol. Btw, at uni in some scientific media studies magazine I came across, there was a reference to yaoi on the front page but when I searched the actual article, I couldn't find any info on it. It seemed like the 'yaoi' word on the title was just referencing to a more general gender studies/queer studies approach that article had. That was weird, and somewhat interesting.
