Oh yeah, I can read japanese text just fine on the internet. Sites come up perfectly, heck it'll even let me type in it if I knew wtf I was doing. But this game just wants to be a *****.

Same here. I'm just hoping the English patch for TnC will let me understand. *hope*

This may be a compatibility issue. There might be a service pack or an update you need to download for the game to work properly on Windows 7.

I found the solution~!!!

It's a Non-Unicode thing setting. Guide is here!

I followed it, restarted my computer, reinstalled the game, and it works like a charm!

EDIT: Maybe you can try doing this setting without uninstalling. I lost all my load games...

Yeah I did that and all the text looks fine now but after a few lines of text it still crashes and gives me the mainsystem.exe failure or w/e. :\

Restart.
Try and see.

Did this like 3 times. Like I said, it has no problem reading the japanese text or anything, it just shuts off after a few lines of it.

i would try reinstalling the game then, as it seems your error is coming from something else.

I was lurking around other sites, and I found out that games must be installed while your locale is set to Japanese, otherwise, even if you set it that way later, it doesn't work.
