Recently I've bought a blu-ray disc from Japan, and somehow it doesn't play on my laptop. I do have a blu-ray reader (or whatever it's called), I tried changing regional setting, I tried VLC player, all those didn't work.
Any idea on this?

Make sure you have the right codecs installed. I suggest you go download the Combined Community Codec Pack (CCCP) if you haven't already. If that doesn't work, use Media Player Classic. You can find both for free by Googling them.
bluray playback requires a paid license, which comes with programs like Corel Win DVD Plus, ArcSoft TotalMedia Theater, and CyberLink PowerDVD.
my preferred method, however, is Slysoft AnyDVD HD. this will remove the copy protection and let you watch the video in your media player of choice. also, you will be able to rip the video if you so chose.
proprietary formats. gotta love em.
none of them are free, or cheap for that matter... but thats not to say that you cant obtain them through other channels, but you'll have to search for yourself, as im pretty sure im not supposed to tell you where you can find a torrent for it.
