Too strict and too many rules... maybe?

Hello!

I don't know if it's only me or what, but I find the rules in this forum pretty.... too strict and too much. I really love this forum yes, and I understand that this forum need some certian rules to keep the forum going. But for me, I am getting more and more uncomfortable with all these rules....

For example, when I was a newbie I posted a 'thank you post' to some people who was sharing their manga, and got a warning. Which is understandable.
But these days, I have gotten a pretty fast line, so I wanted to upload more stuff to share with people out there who can not use bittorrent. And after some uploading of anime and stuff, I got a notice which told me that it was unecessary to upload the anime since some of the previous links of other people were not dead. Somehow I can not understand... why can't people post their sharing link as they please? (but they might have their own reason)

In my point of view, there are too many rules in this forum to sum up... it's making me dizzy... I mean, if you have the time and the good english skills, then it would be no problem. But for me, who's busy and have limited knowledge of English, reading all those rules and memorize them are really.... tiring for me ^^;;

I am getting more and more scepitcal to post a post here now... I always check afterward if I got any warnings or stuff...

I know rules are necessary... but would there be any chance that you can do something about it...

Btw, did I post this post the right place? Hope I won't get one more warning or notice :P

I do understand what you're saying - really I do...but I've seen what happens to sites that don't have so many rules. This forum have over 11,000 active members. I cringe of the thought of the Chaos that would ensue from trying to operate a site with so many members without all these rules.

The rules might be a little annoying. ( Your statement does make me wonder how many people actually share you view...) - but I really do believe and always have, that this site would pretty much implode without them.

This is just one person's opinion. I'm not speaking for the site staff in general - but I do believe that they would agree with me, in that the rules aarinfantasy has in place are necessary for the continued existence and coherence of this site.

Miko, I totally agree with you...I know a site that used to have less rules...it was total chaos, avatars and banners were huge and all (I mean, this is like...don't people have common sense? you know that if your banner is too big that you're annoying other people who have slow connections, etc...)
they had to completly reboot the site, and now they've got plenty of rules,,,and I must admit, the site is way more fun now,

as for not having time, setsuna,,,you know when you join that there are rules to respect, even if you don't read the whole stuff,,,you can read the big lines and have an idea of what's allowed and what's not (I did it that way at least,,,)

and I guess that when you're really wondering about something, you can always ask the mods here (I think they're pretty nice compared to other sites---)

also setsuna, I'm not trying to scold you or anything, but if you know the rules at least a bit, you won't get afraid of posting here and there,,,
and if you do, you can always re-read some rules, right?

I understand what you say about a lot of rules.

BUT I must say that this forum at least has rules that make sense. I had also had intentions of uploading some manga but I read and realised that none of them would have been allowed ;)

But no sweat, I think when the rules are comprehensive and pretty easy to follow that they are most welcome to avoid all the potential chaos.

Believe me I belong to a few other forums and some of the rules make no sense at all eg. a one *unnamed* forum it is against the rules to thank people at all, this is considered spamming and you have a max of 4 posts allowed per day :( definitely not cool.

Also I think the mods here are really helpful unlike some places where they do not answer posts and will warn you for pming them . Go figure.

Aarinfantasy forum is a great place to be and the rules are not unreasonable.

Yeah.... I understand... hehe... guess it's just me who's too lazy to read :P (PS. I do read them, haha.... but just the main rules :P )

But there is one rule that I want to point out... For.example yesterday I uploaded a yaoi anime with megaupload. But later on, I got a notice that there was a live link of that certain anime (also megaupload). Here comes my question... Do I have to check if all anime links are dead or not before I decide to upload? I know same links would be necessary.
BUT, if the previous links was uploaded for many days go, my thought was, maybe the link will expire soon, then I shall also upload one more, so that people won't be begging for re-upload later. Since I had so much time yesterday...

I do read the big lines in the rules... but there are just toooo many small details that I keep forgetting or.... not noticed :P Hehe...

Anyway, I know rules is MUST have... but would it be THAT bad if they could reduce some of the small details? Like the one I mentioned, uploading a file which is not totally dead.... (if you know what I mean)

well, you see...
my point of view on that rule is: the more links there are, the more won't be used.
You've got so many links that you just don't know which one to use, so that way other links will die out...So I think it's better to have some people upload on some links, people will use them...and if some expire they can always post in the reupload section (if it still exists at least---but I think so)

btw, I got that notice myself...

it's like..avoiding unneeded work (it's easy to get credits that wya though T___T )

We encourage each and everyone to upload only if necessary so as to fully utilize all the previous download links posted in each thread. The reason why we put an announcement regarding this matter is that some of the forumers tend to over-upload which might cause previous download links to expire without being used up until it reach its own limit/capacity.

As for the rules, there are many rules scattered in the forum because there's a need for it. Way back when I was still a newbie and the forum is still small, there are only few members online...there are few rules and threads. But as the forum grows bigger, rules must be revised in order to make everything go smooth, otherwise it will be messy. As we implement the rules, we make sure that they are clear, specific, understandable and simple. But if you think some of the rules are confusing, please let us know so that it can be corrected.

Wahaha... okey okey... guess I have to stick to the rules from today ^^;; I totally agree that the mod here are doing a great job! (but sometimes a little bit scary)

Like the first time I made a post, it was a 'thank you' post for someone sharing a manga. Then later I got a warning like this 'You have to read the rules, since you are a newbie, we won't ban you for this time'. And I was like... O_o;; So... after that warning, I didn't had the motivation to post for a year or two :P

Anyway, in order to respect the forum, I will read the rules! XD But... sometimes I will make misstakes... so, be nice to me :P

Yea... ^^ The Mods try to be as fair to everyone as possible. For example if they see someone struggling with the english language they'll inform them of the rules but not necessarily give them a little warning on their first post. ^__^ They're all very nice, I liked working with them, when I did~. ^^ { I wish I could again. T__T }

And yes, about posting a MegaUpload link especially... MegaUpload links don't ever expire unless unused. The only reason the previous ones would have expired would be because they'd get unused because of the new one~. ^^ See...? And it makes sense to have the rule also - I'm not sure if this was mentioned yet - because otherwise because of others wanting points, they would just keep uploading the same episodes over and over and over again to the same hosts, all in the same day, just to get points... { You can't imagine how far people would go sometimes. ^^; They'd post 50 links of just one episode on the same host if they were allowed. And that is just a waste of forum space when there are already working ones, a waste of credits because it's not even about the sharing anymore once you've posted what didn't need to be, it's about the points... And a waste of time, it's sad. ;___; I upload a lot, for example. That's not what I'm saying. But I don't upload anything to a host - such as YSI - that already has working links for it~. ^^ Because those YSI ones can be used instead of mine. }

I think that's it. ^^ ~glomps~ You did have a very good point though. But you shouldn't worry about the Mods warning you. ^__^ They usually won't ban you unless you do something repeatedly within a certain amount of time, or unless you're really mean to someone or post something innappropriate, so it's all good. ^^~

Also, i have a feeling that the other problem is that when all those links die, all you have left are useless, content-less driftwood for posts. All that clutter could muck up things. >.<

Yea... the forum is kind of messy at times as is. I shudder to think what it would be like without each and every rule we have. ~shudders~ It would just be... chaos. @__@; We'd never be able to find anything, everyone would just post whatever... It wouldn't be a fun place anymore. :<

Wow... I didn't know it could be that serious ^^;; Never been handing a forum before... so I have no knowledge how to maintain a forum, or how a forum works... Now I am having more and more respect for the mod here after understanding more... ^^;;

Obeying the rules is not only out of respect for those who have put them down but for the rest of the forumers. A disorganized forum is not a fun place to be... and as it was said, there are 11,000+ active forumers. This is a huge board. Even if you don't understand the rules, put faith in the fact that the mods have put them in place to make everything run as smoothly as possible. ^^

there are rules even for the introduction forum now :( eh ow well, i won't complain, cos it's not nice, but i'm not so much into this forum anymore lately...too many rules for me (i HATE rules, why can't people just rely on common sense - obviously because some don't have it *little voice in my head said the (sad) answer*)
for instance i never created a thread so that i get points for what i upload cos HONESTLY it takes too much of my time to browse through all posts an see which links are active and not >_> i think it would be much easier to browse through host links threads for example is everyone edited their posts there when needed, not just post a different message with new links. just my point of view ^^;

Totally agree... Too many rules demotivates people to act active in a forum. But on the other hand, if there's too few rules, the forum will be a chaos (according to what all people in this threat said earlier). It's really hard to find a balance here....
And yes, why can't people just rely on common sense? (but like u said, not everyone can... -_- )
It's not easy...

This forum's the best! People need rules to govern them as in our daily lives beside I think the rules here are easy to understand even for a non native english speaker like me. If I don't understand I'll ask the mods or anyone and so far they've helped me a lot ^^

I totally understand what forumers feel when they find out they're many rules, but a warning is just that, a warning, not a banning at all, and the staff always offers their help and there's many ways to contact us. My PM account is always available unless of course it's full.

I used to think most of the rules were implied and then I was surprised again and again on what ppl did! lol So at the end it's better to set everything from the beggining and believe me, every sentence we write about this has a reason (and sometimes even an anecdote!). Sometimes are actually the forumers the ones who ask for rules (like the autor's posting restriction in the gallery).

And as many of you already said, without rules this place will be a caos, specially considering Aaarinfantasy is one of the biggest yaoi forum.
But don't be scared, just check the rules, use your common sense and of course have fun.

Heiya~ Since there are so many experts and mods here, I might just ask you a question :P Today I suddenly recieved 50 points... But according to what I know, you only earn points by uploading things or invites a friend. But I guess those 50 points are not from the things I have been uploading (since there will be many thousands... I guess ^^;; ) So... how come I got those 50 points? Any suggestion?

on the top of the forum page you see 'vbPlaza Menu', go there to 'history', maybe you can see there who gave you the points... if it was a mod who gave them they are likely to be for some kind of contribution

It's seems like you've been here for quite a while... aren't they just the points you got for simply registering? I know they don't do that anymore nowadays, but since you've been here since before that new rule... I dunno... you sure it only showed up recently???

You do accumulate some points as time passes by. I think it's similar to the way you accumulate rep power with time. I'm not sure what the parameters are though - like how many points gained in what amount of time. That's something daikun may have set up during the installion/upgrading proces at some point.

Interest from points stored in the bank accrues at a set time every day at a rate of 1%.

Bonuses do occur at special times...for instance, there is (i've heard) a function that gives you a few points each month if you have zero funds.

Maybe we could translate the rules in a couple of languages?

If you ask for people to volunteer I'm pretty sure we'll be able to have a nice result!

Yea but... most of the time it's not that people don't understand, it's just that they don't ever read them or even try to in the first place...

There are a lot of rules, but I think they're all pretty important for the most part, especially with the number of active members here.

I agree that with all the rules it makes it hard to remember some of them, and with lots of areas on this site where they could be posted just makes it harder to find what rules you're looking for sometimes. I use to spend time just looking for where I read the rules so I wouldn't accidentally break them! However, they're all worth learning and mostly are common sense in one way or another.

For instance, the rule of not uploading an anime/manga/doujinshi where older links are active I completely understand and am glad the rule was finally set in place. I understand people are trying to help and everything, but I just see the extra links as spam -- and even worse if nothing but already existing links are posted. It's actually something that really irritates me... I'm strange, I know.

The reason: Someone else has already taken the time to upload to that particular hosting site before you, and an extra link from that site isn't needed in any way, if the site goes down or has problems neither link will work and the only thing the extra link will accomplish is splitting up where people will download from, maybe causing one or both to expire before their time. The same thing can be caused from too many available download links, so adding to that with the exact same place to download from is going overboard. And then there's the whole thing where people could abuse it for the points alone.

I think it's just a simple courtesy to make sure you aren't posting something that another person has already taken time to upload (I admit I do it once in a while, mistakes & bad timing happen) but there's no point in doing it purposely, if you're already taking the time to upload a file then checking the one or two other links from the host shouldn't be too difficult. Odds are they're still active and if they aren't and someone wants to download from that site they can always make a request.

I totally agree with Carmel on this one. In fact... I think the rules are still pretty mild when it comes to uploading... personally I think it's absolutely ridiculous that there are some people who, after there are already zillions of filefactory, megaupload, ysi links, still upload to some second rank site like mooload!! That's when it stops just being nice and trying to help and turns into just being greedy for points and rep... If I were the one making the rules here I would have put a stop to that loooong ago...

I suggest a list is made of standard upload sites like megaupload, filefactory, ysi, sendspace, etc. And only when someone specifically requests a site like mooload or spread-it is it allowed to upload there... not many will probably feel the same way but it really annoys me the way some people try to make a buck out of everything...

I have been on this forum for one year already, I've read the rules maybe a few times and I have not been warned even once! If I can do it... anyone can... you just have to want it...

The problem is still that they're ignoring them. In each section it sends you to a page where before you can enter the section, you're expected to read the rules, and agree to them. If you neglect to read them but you agreed to them anyways, you should still be blamed for breaking them when it happens. Because they agreed to the terms without having actually read them, and that's not cool. =P

I have no problem with the rules. After all, that's probably the reason this site is so good. That and the wonderful forumers who make it up and admins/mods who help run it. ;-)

I've been on forums with hardly any rules and it's like a madhouse. No fun at all.

I think most of the people in this forum just look fast at the rules (or not even reading them), they are just using common sense (like me :P )
Maybe we should set up a poll to see how many people actually reads the rules ^^;; Hehe...

I am an admin on a bellydance forum as it's almost double the size of Aarin :S and it's just hard even though the rules are nowhere near complex as Aarin's. You'd think that people would have basic common sense but people still surprise me with what they post.

One thing on the issue of the uploads - I use my own server, rather than places like YSI or Megaupload. I dislike those sites, mainly for the spy/adware that is used (as well as the popups/unders. Is there one set of links for ppl who prefer using sites like that, and another set of links for people with their own servers like me?

I haven't been to the site for months, so I'm still trying to find my way through again...

As for the rules....as a veteran of forums, rules are a necessary fact of life, as well as the fact that not everyone will read them. Not reading them is not an excuse for not following common sense, however. But that said, it's when you get into the not-common-sense rules that there should be some leeway granted if people haven't read them. Not a lot, but a little - ppl are gonna be idiots if you give 'em too much slack. (yes, I'm a harsh forum admin on the forums I run, I admit it...*coughs*)

I have no issues with the rules. They are there to keep people safe, prevent chaos, and to prevent underaged users (and yes there are some on the forum!) from getting ahold of anything inappropriate which could get this forum shut down. I for one would really like for Aarin to keep functioning so I'll follow just about any rules that get put into effect. Keep up the good work guys and gals!

I think people in the poll will be more honest if u make questions such as:

Do you ever read the rules before you enter...?

- Everything carefully...
- Go fast through it...
- Almost not...
- Don't read them at all...

(sorry for the poor english again ^^;; )

I would really like to see the result of the poll ^^ It would be fun to see the result XD
