nice but lacking
I saw the blurb for this and just had to read it, as it sounded so interesting and something I would enjoy. Then I saw the scanlation wasn't complete and was a little put off by it (too impatient, that's my trouble) but I went ahead and read the first chapter anyway. The art for me was pretty, I did like the characters and the plot was intriguing...but I'm still disappointed with it.
Wasn't enough of it, simple as that. The blurb on the back for me said that the manga was complied of different short stories, and this I think, was a complete story. Though I really hope it isn't. What little there was I did enjoy, with it being the classic forbbiden love type of story. Though I would have rated the plot higher than two stars if I had not have watched Moulin Rouge as the plots are very similar. I don't wish to give anything away, but if anyone has seen the film, they will recognise what I mean. If you haven't, then it is a very sad story. Having said that, by then end, I did tear up a little as it was bittersweet and beautfiul and sad yet hopeful. The ending was perfect, and the story was dotted with anceint Japanese poetry and it was wonderful to read. And this is why I am so disappointed with this story, because it could have been so right for me.
The bones of the story were there, but the flesh wasn't. You didn't find out how Shirogane got into 'teaching' the new 'recruits', why Yuki's mother sold him or even how Yuki managed with his first 'client'. It skipped over a lot, which annoyed me and usually I am forgiving if the plot is well constructed. Hence my extreme annoyance with this one.
I did notice some cliches and thought that Shirogane, who had taught many others before Yuki, did fall in love far too quickly for my tastes.
I would reccommend others to read this as tastes differ between people and others may enjoy it more than I did but I will say this is the fourth or thereabouts manga I have read, and seasoned readers I doubt would enjoy it much as I'm sure there are better stories similar to this already out there that I have yet to discover
As it may be obvious from my review, I have contradictory feelings about this one and it mainly circulates around the lack of story.
To summarise it best,
it started well,
Completely lost it by the middle and rushed a lot of things,
And ended amazingly.
And I sincerely hope that the story is padded out at a later date as if it were, I think it could become a fast and firm favourite of mine.
