You should both put up a step by step process of what you did. It's not easy to troubleshoot unless people actually know what steps you took in mounting it and such.
Also, did you check and make sure your system is up to date with the game's requirements?

It sounds like you skipped some steps. There are two different files you boot at different times, and you also have to install the updates at a certain time.

Start over and try following these instructions exactly (this is using Daemon Tools)
I should note, on my computer Lamento_DVD.ISO looked like a RAR file, but it IS an ISO file.

"Unpack the RAR files into any folder you want (I made a new folder called Lamento).

With Daemon Tools, click on "Virtual CD/DVD-ROM" and hit "Mount image".
    Select Lamento_DVD.ISO.
    Install game.
When you reach the spot for the serial number, open the .txt file ("Konoetan.txt", but it has Japanese letters). Keep hitting Next until it installs.

Now you'll have a new folder.

    Apply LmtDVDVer101.EXE and LmtDVDVer102.EXE.

    Unmount LAMENTO_DVD.ISO.
Mount boot.iso in it's place. For me it opened a folder for my "F drive", which was blank. I just closed the window and selected the game through the start menu.
    Works perfectly :3 Have fun."

    Here's another guess.
Are your computers set in Japanese?

Under control panel, go to Regional Options.
    "Regional and Language Options"
For a game I'm playing right now, on "Regional Options" (first button) under Standards and formats, I have to have it set to Japanese.
Under Advanced, set it to Japanese.
Most games only need it set under Advanced, but I just keep both set that way and don't have any problems.

Does your computer meet the requirements?
    DVD-Rom/CD-Rom
    Windows 98SE/Me/2000/XPro/XPhome
    CPU: Pentium III 600MHz/Celeron 633MHz
    HDD 1.5GB
    Directx 9.0
    Memory 256MB
    800 x 600 resolution
    BGM - PCM

I followed the exact instructions, and everything seemed to be working fine, yet I come up with a black screen as well.

My computer is very new, *and* I tried to put all my settings in Japanese like suggested, but it still doesn't work.

Everything opens and loads and installs, it just comes up with a black screen when I open it to play

Can anyone think of any other ways to install the files?

    Thanks in advance!

edited: when you say to apply the two .exe files, does that just mean to copy them into the folder where the game is installed?

No, you have to open the .exe files and let them install. They should install very quickly. They're patches to the game.

Perhaps that is what is happening if no one is installing the patches correctly... I didn't even have to do any besides double-click them.

I reinstalled the patches. Last time it looked like only the first one had installed properly.

Thanks a lot for the prompt help! It works perfectly now.

    I FIXED IT!
Ok I have Windows Vista. I installed everything properly according to the instructions in the download forum, had set my Format in Regional and Language options to Japanese, I even have Direct X 10. The only thing I did differently was that I installed the latest patch for the game by extracting it to a separate folder, then copying the files into the game folder (it replaces a couple in there). The latest patch is a single file, which you can get from the NitroChiral website. This doesn't solve the problem tho...

So I went to Control Panel-->Regional and Language Options--> Administrative tab --> Change system locale to Japanese. I hadn't done this before and I think this is necessary.
I also kept the Format (in Formats tab) in Japanese.

Try that, it will hopefully work. I didn't set the icon to "Compatibility with Windows XP" because that just makes it crash.
