    [SOLVED] Windows Explorer Crashing

I have Windows 7, and as of last month Windows Explorer keeps crashing every 5 minutes. I looked it up, but can't make any sense of the instructions to fix this (And I don't want to mess it up). So can someone explain to me more clearly what I have to do to get rid of the crashing?

EDIT: So I did what the first answer said here

C:\Windows <- Inside this folder you should find the file "explorer.exe". Select that and press "CTRL+C" (this will copy the file, do NOT cut, just copy).

Then paste the copied file into:

    C:\Windows\System32

Has anyone followed the same/similar thing and got it fixed?

    Did it fixed the problem?
Did you install anything right before the crashing started?

I restarted it today and there doesn't seem to be a problem now. And no, I didn't install anything right before the crashing started, it happened about once a month before this though.

It happened today again, but this time after I pressed 'Restart' it refreshed and then did this three times (Windows Explorer stopped working three times within 1-2 minutes, this has never happened before). It stayed frozen for 4-5 minutes and stopped after a while.

so now explorer is not working at all ??
have you tried to down-load and re-install explorer??
get the same version see if that can help
I did hear that the latest version of flash player is causing random problems..you can try disabling the flash plug-in in your browser...seems it also conflicts with "quicktime" browser plug-ins

best yet please try another browser ...it can save you a lot of headaches

The crash one is Windows Explorer, program for browsing files, not Internet Explorer, program for browsing web.

Usually if Explorer crash, I restart Windows. Better restart it myself before this crash lead to bigger system conflict and dear Blue Screen come to visit!

Did you try to end explorer.exe process in Task Manager and run it again from run command?

Last time I tried that on my other computer, it stopped working all together and I had to go through Safe Mode to undo it. I'm sorta scared because this one is barely a year old.

@lemur7- No, not the browser, I don't even use IE, I use firefox.

Strange! It stop everything!? In my case when I end explorer.exe the only thing left is Task Manager then I run explorer again.

There is another method of exit explorer by open start menu right click on empty area while pressing ctrl + shift, then select Exit Explorer. This one is called, safe exit of Windows Explorer...safer then end it process, at least... But after that you have to run the explorer via run command again.

Otherwise, maybe you have to go through standard Microsoft checklist. Do you have any customize program that custom Windows settings? Do you update Windows regularly? Do you install new Driver? Do you update your driver?

    Hey~
Is this thing only happening when you're using firefox? A friend of mine had been experiencing something similar to this and in the end we figured it was because of firefox (something to do with a plugin/addon). Try using opera and don't open firefox for a session and see if the problem still occurs.

I would also want to recommend you to stop all unnecessary services and programs loading at the beginning.

    run: msconfig
at the startup tab un-check all the unneeded programs (everything except your security software and maybe ctfmon)
at the services tab check "hide all microsoft services" and then uncheck the unnecessary services.

This will help you understand the cause of this better.

Btw you can manually start explorer by typing this to the run box: explorer.exe after you kill the process.
