Try using epsxe instead? That emulator always works for me.

If you're unfamiliar with what plugins to get for ePSXE, you're likely to get lost really quickly.
I generally use PSXFin. Everything is included in the program and it has a super easy setup. All you need is the PS1 bios, which you needed anyway to run ePSXE.

Basically, of the three PS1 emulators that are most often recommended, ePSXe is the best-maintained (it still gets periodic updates) and arguably the best/fastest, but won't play all games and has a complex setup. PCSX (not to be confused with PCSX2, the PS2 emulator created by the same team) has a similar setup and is no longer maintained (I think), but will work with some games that ePSXe won't handle. pSX is slower than either of the other two and delivers lower visual quality, but requires almost no setup (it still needs a bios, but there are no plugins) and supposedly works with pretty much any PS1 game there is. Pick one according to your needs.
