It's not about how much money they currently have, it's about how much they cannot make with scans out there. To me it makes sense b/c if they don't make enough profit each year then eventually they'll run out of money. They have people to pay and production costs to cover.

As schetenei said, it won't be the individual users who will be targeted if Core decides to pursue legal action - that would be much too difficult, if not impossible and it probably doesn't raise the sort of public policy/moral issues that some internet crime, such as dissemination of child pornography, does which might justify hunting down individual users and downloaders. The people in trouble will be the owners of the website (ie. Aarin) and possibly the forum/server provider (whether they knew what was being hosted or not). And if, as you say, CORE is loaded (I have no idea), then there's even more reason for Aarinfantasy to take notice because if they do decide to take action, you can bet they will have a big-ass, over-paid, clever (probably in-house) legal team to represent them, who can outlast, in terms of resources and money, any kind of small operation like a fan-based forum. Not to mention that it is illegal, or could be argued to be so (I have actually seen legal arguments that scanlations only are not illegal based on various international laws, but I doubt that would apply to raws which are exact replicas of products which are commercially available).

I guess my point is that there is a bit more at stake here than Aarinfantasy curtailing our enjoyment of manga on a whim or arbitrarily denying us a choice of what we download, or even thumbing our nose at rich, corrupt corporations. The manga industry in Japan, from the bits and pieces I have heard, have seriously started cracking down on things like this and there have been recent prosecutions involving people hosting manga (albeit only within Japan itself and possibly for profit, I can't remember). There are much more serious consequences, which will most likely not have any direct affect on us but has the potential to be quite serious for Aarin, which people need to consider before they start crying about not having access to manga.

It's a shame for me too - I like looking at raws (even if I can't read them) and I definately don't have the money to buy anything other than one or two favourites at a time, but you've gotta consider the issue from all viewpoints, including that of a corporation which is possibly being deprived of the chance to make a profit from products which they have laid down capital for, which is the whole purpose of its existance in the first place.

Also, it's not really like Aarin is restricting your freedom to choose. The forum is hosted voluntarily for fans as a favour, subject to donations only (as opposed to fees) and is, and should be, subject to the wishes and considerations of the owner. There is no obligation on Aarin to allow the provision of raw scans or any other material, nor does anyone here have a right to have them provided to them. The notice regarding the decision about CORE scans was also posted publically, clearly and quickly, with an explanation and this thread for us to comment. It was not done arbitrarily or without reasons being given. I don't see that there was anything else anyone could have expected them to do, in terms of making the decision, communicating it and acting on it.And really, Aarinfantasy is by no means the only place on the net to find scans. It's not like they've taken away the only access point.

I don't mean to sound rude or officious, I'm just laying out the reality as I see it.

one thing that i've always found frustrating is that when people talk about corporations being rich and evil etc. they tend to forget that if the corporations suffer losses, it's not the people at the top (the rich and arguably evil ones) who are actually hurt by it. it's everyone at the bottom—all the menial workers struggling to get by on minimum wage who don't have the money, power, or job security to protect them when a corporation has a profit loss.

like the people who think they're sticking it to the man when they steal from a store owned by a large corporation—walmart, for example. as if. the people at the top of the pyramid (CEOs, store managers) aren't going to feel that loss, they're just going to lay off as many of the part-time workers (who can barely afford to live on their crappy wages anyway) as it takes to make up for the loss.

if a large company like CORE loses money through raw scans, do you think that the CEOs (the "corporation") are gonna eat that cost? or do you think they're going to not hire as many new mangaka, not feature your favorite mangaka who just happens to be not as popular, or cut down on publications entirely? manga may be our love, but it's also a business, and it will be the MANGAKA who lose work/jobs when a company like CORE is suffering profit loss from raw downloads.
