what for a current state? (sorry only asking, I'm not into the inustry)

It's depressing to say the least, even though we have to accept it (what other choice is there), I can't find anything positive in it. I'm glad it happened with Drap only, because there aren't as many artists I adore releasing their works under this publisher, nontheless a few hit me hard, I love Ryou Sakurai, and so I will never ever going to get to know how "The sanctuary of a sweet evil spirit" will end ?*cries*, sigh whatever, it could have been worse, for example if Chara, Asuka or BexBoy would decide to pull this.

I very well understand and accept the decision aarins though to put down all the links as fast as possible, who would want to release a war with a publisher, especially if the publisher has all the legal rights on his side. What I don't understand is the sudden (or not so sudden?) change in attitude of Core, I mean they tolerated it for years and suddenly it's not okay anymore? It makes me fear, that other publishers could take the same actions too.

Many wouldn't know all the works outside of Japan, if not for the "advertisement" through the net. I mean I myself am the best example. Often I see a manga on the net, read it and decide I have to have it. The net promotes the work of the mangakas around the world, which will surely increase the sales rate when released as english version too (at least this is my opinion). I think this is the reason why most publishers tolerate this illegal act. It's sad Core magazine doesn't see it this way anymore.
arrgh I only needed to spill my guts.

This is a sad day. It is pure foolishness on the part of the publishers. They have alienated a massive part of their international fan base. Fan scanlations have accounted for the massive rise in American interest in yaoi and actively trying to stop them is just a shot in the foot. Such greed will only create disdain among the most dedicated fans. All they're doing is ensuring that far fewer people will be exposed to their work. A very poor business decision.

i think this is more about the distribution of raw scans than it is about the scanlations. if you can read japanese, you can buy their magazines and tankoubon. this is more difficult/more expensive if you live outside of japan (like most of us do), but still entirely possible. instead, people are downloading and reading for free. this is causing a lot of publishers to lose a LOT of potential money. while i know little about what's going on in the manga publishing industry, i do know that within the american publishing industry magazines and newspapers are suffering huge circulation losses because most people go to the internet for their news or whatever.

scanlations of unlicensed manga, however, have indeed spread the yaoi love to speakers of different languages. the risk, of course, is that people will keep/read the scans rather than buy the manga if they do get licensed in their language, and of course this happens—especially because manga that has been translated is generally between 4 and 5 times the cost of the original.

but, as you pointed out, there wouldn't BE such a huge fanbase for yaoi in a lot of places if it weren't for scanlations. on their own, i don't see the scanlations posing a threat to the japanese publishers, especially because the original is always better than the translation. but remember that if the scanlation exists, the raw scans they were made from exist, and can and will be distributed.

i don't think there is an easy solution to any of this. ehhhhh...

Well, the cost of the licensed titles is indeed insanely high and moreover the quality is often quite dubious. I don´t think that the scanlations really impose a threat to the licensed titles. I know quite a few people who read the scanlation AND bought the title when it was available in english. If it weren´t for all the people who are willing to spend hours and days of their lives working on the scanlations, I doubt that there would be such a huge fanbase and consequently so many licensed titles...it works like a circle, I guess. Anyway, even if it´s difficult, I always try to get my hands on the orgininal title: 1) original is always better, 2) hard to get outside japan but more available than english version, 3) you don´t have to wait from years to read itXD

Anyway, i hope that the scanlations groups won´t drop their Drap releases any time soon

Although sad, I have to admit if I was a publishing group, I would also ask my stuff not to be shared! I like money! So really I do not blame them.

However I have to admit they where very cunning, allowing their titles to be shared for free, until they know a large market has been made for them, then asking the titles not to be shared. I take my hat off to them, I would do just the same! Well I guess if I want one of there titles I will just have to buy a copy... I hate spending money, on something I will read only once!

Well good luck to the mods, having to take all those links down, rather you then me

ahh it would all be half bad, if I actually could read japanese, nothing would bar me from buying dozens and dozens of original titles, even though the import takes some time, but the prize in the end isn't higher than an average soft-cover book here.
But being the way it is, I can't read japanese, nontheless I regularly buy original tankoubons from most favoured artists (and there are quite some), and gladly know whats going on because of scanlations (but it's always, like mentioned above, quite nice to hold the real book in hands rather than clicking on pics on my screen). I really hope too scanlation groups won't give up working on Drap titles.
Sure Core magazine likes money, but I'm asking myself how large the fraction of their money actually is, which they make with fans who buy their works outside of little island Japan. I don't think this part is as big, but it's exactly this population of fans who are hit hardest by this. And it's not as if they are trying to conquer a world market, by selling english publications as well, which would be automatically accessible for a larger audience.

I know this discussing and ranting is futile in the end, it's their decision and they are sure as hell not concerned by our opinion as foreigners, but venting my anger helps a bit haha.
